CES CRU Album Cover

I recently produced an album cover for the local hip hop group, CES CRU.  The album, called The Playground, needed a style of packaging that represented its music.  The album is highly imaginative, and the production has a space, futuristic quality to it.  Ubi, one of the core members of the group, and I brainstormed on possible outcomes, and he wanted to see this imaginary space battle, playground scene come to life.  So, I started sketching…

Playground cover illustration sketch

This was the initial sketch, to set the composition, and begin establishing a color palette.  The idea on the left was a space station, representing the home environment, Kansas City.  That changed to become a space ship, which would represent the producer, Leonard DStroy of Innate Sounds and Deep Thinkers.

This was the second sketch, which has all the illustrative elements involved, only about half way done.

Here we have the illustration finalized.  I really like how this turned out, especially the space debris in the background.  However, I forgot to color this CMYK, and had to convert from RGB when sending off to print.  So, the final version was close, but not quite the same.  Se la vi.

This album is fantastic.  I highly recommend picking it up.  Check out the group at www.cescru.com.
